           AndClyde,feelinghowstrangeitwasthattheReverendMcMillancouldnotconscientiouslybringhimselftodomorethanthatforhim.Howsad.Howhopeless.Wouldnooneeverunderstandorgivehimcreditforhishumanifalltoohumanandperhapswronghungersyetfromwhichsomanyothersalongwithhimselfsuffered?

           Butworseyet,ifanything,Mrs.Griffiths,becauseofwhattheReverendMcMillanhadsaidorfailedtosay,inanswertothefinalquestionaskedbyGovernorWalthamandalthoughsubsequentlyinanswertoaninquiryofherown,hehadrepeatedthestatement,shewasstaggeredbythethoughtthatperhaps,afterall,Clydewasasguiltyasatfirstshehadfeared.Andbecauseofthataskingatonepoint:

           "Clyde,ifthereisanythingyouhavenotconfessed,youmustconfessitbeforeyougo."

           "IhaveconfessedeverythingtoGodandtoMr.McMillan,Mother.Isn’tthatenough?"

           "No,Clyde.Youhavetoldtheworldthatyouareinnocent.Butifyouarenotyoumustsayso."

           "ButifmyconsciencetellsmethatIamright,isnotthatenough?"

           "No,notifGod’swordsaysdifferently,Clyde,"repliedMrs.Griffithsnervouslyandwithgreatinwardspiritualtorture.Buthechosetosaynothingfurtheratthattime.HowcouldhediscusswithhismotherortheworldthestrangeshadingswhichinhisconfessionandsubsequenttalkswiththeReverendMcMillanhehadnotbeenabletosolve.Itwasnottobedone.
