           Theoldmanwasattiredinasuitofglisteningwateredsilk,trimmedwithsteelbuttons,beautifullycutandpolished.Histhinbutwirylegswerearrayedinapairofrichlyembroideredclockedstockings,evidentlyofEnglishmanufacture,whilefromhisthree-corneredhatdependedalongstreamingknotofwhiteandblueribbons.Thushecamealong,supportinghimselfonacuriouslycarvedstick,hisagedcountenancelitupwithhappiness,lookingforalltheworldlikeoneoftheageddandiesof1796,paradingthenewlyopenedgardensoftheTuileriesandLuxembourg.BesidehimglidedCaderousse,whosedesiretopartakeofthegoodthingsprovidedforthewedding-partyhadinducedhimtobecomereconciledtotheDantes,fatherandson,althoughtherestilllingeredinhismindafaintandunperfectrecollectionoftheeventsoftheprecedingnight;justasthebrainretainsonwakinginthemorningthedimandmistyoutlineofadream.

           AsDanglarsapproachedthedisappointedlover,hecastonhimalookofdeepmeaning,whileFernand,asheslowlypacedbehindthehappypair,whoseemed,intheirownunmixedcontent,tohaveentirelyforgottenthatsuchabeingashimselfexisted,waspaleandabstracted;occasionally,however,adeepflushwouldoverspreadhiscountenance,andanervouscontractiondistorthisfeatures,while,withanagitatedandrestlessgaze,hewouldglanceinthedirectionofMarseilles,likeonewhoeitheranticipatedorforesawsomegreatandimportantevent.
