           Thejudgestooktheirplacesinthemidstofthemostprofoundsilence;thejurytooktheirseats;M.deVillefort,theobjectofunusualattention,andwehadalmostsaidofgeneraladmiration,satinthearm-chairandcastatranquilglancearoundhim.Everyonelookedwithastonishmentonthatgraveandsevereface,whosecalmexpressionpersonalgriefshadbeenunabletodisturb,andtheaspectofamanwhowasastrangertoallhumanemotionsexcitedsomethingveryliketerror.

           "Gendarmes,"saidthepresident,"leadintheaccused."

           Atthesewordsthepublicattentionbecamemoreintense,andalleyeswereturnedtowardsthedoorthroughwhichBenedettowastoenter.Thedoorsoonopenedandtheaccusedappeared.Thesameimpressionwasexperiencedbyallpresent,andnoonewasdeceivedbytheexpressionofhiscountenance.Hisfeaturesborenosignofthatdeepemotionwhichstopsthebeatingoftheheartandblanchesthecheek.Hishands,gracefullyplaced,oneuponhishat,theotherintheopeningofhiswhitewaistcoat,werenotatalltremulous;hiseyewascalmandevenbrilliant.Scarcelyhadheenteredthehallwhenheglancedatthewholebodyofmagistratesandassistants;hiseyerestedlongeronthepresident,andstillmoresoontheking’sattorney.BythesideofAndreawasstationedthelawyerwhowastoconducthisdefence,andwhohadbeenappointedbythecourt,forAndreadisdainedtopayanyattentiontothosedetails,towhichheappearedtoattachnoimportance.
