AyearafterLouisXVIII.‘srestoration,avisitwasmadebytheinspector-generalofprisons.Dantesinhiscellheardthenoiseofpreparation—soundsthatatthedepthwherehelaywouldhavebeeninaudibletoanybuttheearofaprisoner,whocouldhearthesplashofthedropofwaterthateveryhourfellfromtheroofofhisdungeon.Heguessedsomethinguncommonwaspassingamongtheliving;buthehadsolongceasedtohaveanyintercoursewiththeworld,thathelookeduponhimselfasdead.
Theinspectorvisited,oneafteranother,thecellsanddungeonsofseveraloftheprisoners,whosegoodbehaviororstupidityrecommendedthemtotheclemencyofthegovernment.Heinquiredhowtheywerefed,andiftheyhadanyrequesttomake.Theuniversalresponsewas,thatthefarewasdetestable,andthattheywantedtobesetfree.
Theinspectoraskediftheyhadanythingelsetoaskfor.Theyshooktheirheads.Whatcouldtheydesirebeyondtheirliberty?Theinspectorturnedsmilinglytothegovernor.
"Idonotknowwhatreasongovernmentcanassignfortheseuselessvisits;whenyouseeoneprisoner,youseeall—alwaysthesamething—illfedandinnocent.Arethereanyothers?"
"Yes;thedangerousandmadprisonersareinthedungeons."
