           Thecommissaryofpolice,ashetraversedtheante-chamber,madeasigntotwogendarmes,whoplacedthemselvesoneonDantes’rightandtheotheronhisleft.AdoorthatcommunicatedwiththePalaisdeJusticewasopened,andtheywentthroughalongrangeofgloomycorridors,whoseappearancemighthavemadeeventheboldestshudder.ThePalaisdeJusticecommunicatedwiththeprisonasombreedifice,thatfromitsgratedwindowslooksontheclock-toweroftheAccoules.Afternumberlesswindings,Dantessawadoorwithanironwicket.Thecommissarytookupanironmalletandknockedthrice,everyblowseemingtoDantesasifstruckonhisheart.Thedooropened,thetwogendarmesgentlypushedhimforward,andthedoorclosedwithaloudsoundbehindhim.Theairheinhaledwasnolongerpure,butthickandmephitichewasinprison.Hewasconductedtoatolerablyneatchamber,butgratedandbarred,anditsappearance,therefore,didnotgreatlyalarmhim;besides,thewordsofVillefort,whoseemedtointeresthimselfsomuch,resoundedstillinhisearslikeapromiseoffreedom.Itwasfouro’clockwhenDanteswasplacedinthischamber.Itwas,aswehavesaid,the1stofMarch,andtheprisonerwassoonburiedindarkness.Theobscurityaugmentedtheacutenessofhishearing;attheslightestsoundheroseandhastenedtothedoor,convincedtheywereabouttoliberatehim,butthesounddiedaway,andDantessankagainintohisseat.
