The Catalans.

           Beyondabare,weather-wornwall,aboutahundredpacesfromthespotwherethetwofriendssatlookingandlisteningastheydranktheirwine,wasthevillageoftheCatalans.LongagothismysteriouscolonyquittedSpain,andsettledonthetongueoflandonwhichitistothisday.Whenceitcamenooneknew,anditspokeanunknowntongue.Oneofitschiefs,whounderstoodProvencal,beggedthecommuneofMarseillestogivethemthisbareandbarrenpromontory,where,likethesailorsofold,theyhadruntheirboatsashore.Therequestwasgranted;andthreemonthsafterwards,aroundthetwelveorfifteensmallvesselswhichhadbroughtthesegypsiesofthesea,asmallvillagesprangup.Thisvillage,constructedinasingularandpicturesquemanner,halfMoorish,halfSpanish,stillremains,andisinhabitedbydescendantsofthefirstcomers,whospeakthelanguageoftheirfathers.Forthreeorfourcenturiestheyhaveremaineduponthissmallpromontory,onwhichtheyhadsettledlikeaflightofseabirds,withoutmixingwiththeMarseillaisepopulation,intermarrying,andpreservingtheiroriginalcustomsandthecostumeoftheirmother-countryastheyhavepreserveditslanguage.

           Ourreaderswillfollowusalongtheonlystreetofthislittlevillage,andenterwithusoneofthehouses,whichissunburnedtothebeautifuldead-leafcolorpeculiartothebuildingsofthecountry,andwithincoatedwithwhitewash,likeaSpanishposada.
