Abouttwo-thirdsofthewayalongtheFaubourgSaint–Honore,andintherearofoneofthemostimposingmansionsinthisrichneighborhood,wherethevarioushousesviewitheachotherforeleganceofdesignandmagnificenceofconstruction,extendedalargegarden,wherethewide-spreadingchestnut-treesraisedtheirheadshighabovethewallsinasolidrampart,andwiththecomingofeveryspringscatteredashowerofdelicatepinkandwhiteblossomsintothelargestonevasesthatstooduponthetwosquarepilastersofacuriouslywroughtirongate,thatdatedfromthetimeofLouisXII.Thisnobleentrance,however,inspiteofitsstrikingappearanceandthegracefuleffectofthegeraniumsplantedinthetwovases,astheywavedtheirvariegatedleavesinthewindandcharmedtheeyewiththeirscarletbloom,hadfallenintoutterdisuse.Theproprietorsofthemansionhadmanyyearsbeforethoughtitbesttoconfinethemselvestothepossessionofthehouseitself,withitsthicklyplantedcourt-yard,openingintotheFaubourgSaint–Honore,andtothegardenshutinbythisgate,whichformerlycommunicatedwithafinekitchen-gardenofaboutanacre.Forthedemonofspeculationdrewaline,orinotherwordsprojectedastreet,atthefarthersideofthekitchen-garden.
