           Danteshadnotbeenadayonboardbeforehehadaveryclearideaofthemenwithwhomhislothadbeencast.WithouthavingbeenintheschooloftheAbbeFaria,theworthymasterofTheYoungAmelia(thenameoftheGenoesetartan)knewasmatteringofallthetonguesspokenontheshoresofthatlargelakecalledtheMediterranean,fromtheArabictotheProvencal,andthis,whileitsparedhiminterpreters,personsalwaystroublesomeandfrequentlyindiscreet,gavehimgreatfacilitiesofcommunication,eitherwiththevesselshemetatsea,withthesmallboatssailingalongthecoast,orwiththepeoplewithoutname,country,oroccupation,whoarealwaysseenonthequaysofseaports,andwholivebyhiddenandmysteriousmeanswhichwemustsupposetobeadirectgiftofprovidence,astheyhavenovisiblemeansofsupport.ItisfairtoassumethatDanteswasonboardasmuggler.

           AtfirstthecaptainhadreceivedDantesonboardwithacertaindegreeofdistrust.Hewasverywellknowntothecustomsofficersofthecoast;andastherewasbetweentheseworthiesandhimselfaperpetualbattleofwits,hehadatfirstthoughtthatDantesmightbeanemissaryoftheseindustriousguardiansofrightsandduties,whoperhapsemployedthisingeniousmeansoflearningsomeofthesecretsofhistrade.
