           Theassizes,also,wereabouttobegin,andVillefort,shutupinhisroom,exertedhimselfwithfeverishanxietyindrawingupthecaseagainstthemurdererofCaderousse.Thisaffair,likeallthoseinwhichtheCountofMonteCristohadinterfered,causedagreatsensationinParis.Theproofswerecertainlynotconvincing,sincetheyresteduponafewwordswrittenbyanescapedgalley-slaveonhisdeath-bed,andwhomighthavebeenactuatedbyhatredorrevengeinaccusinghiscompanion.
