           DanglarsandCaderoussesetoffupontheirerrandatfullspeed;buteretheyhadgonemanystepstheyperceivedagroupadvancingtowardsthem,composedofthebetrothedpair,apartyofyounggirlsinattendanceonthebride,bywhosesidewalkedDantes’father;thewholebroughtupbyFernand,whoselipsworetheirusualsinistersmile.

           NeitherMercedesnorEdmondobservedthestrangeexpressionofhiscountenance;theyweresohappythattheywereconsciousonlyofthesunshineandthepresenceofeachother.

           Havingacquittedthemselvesoftheirerrand,andexchangedaheartyshakeofthehandwithEdmond,DanglarsandCaderoussetooktheirplacesbesideFernandandoldDantesthelatterofwhomattracteduniversalnotice.
