Chapter 36. The Marshalsea becomes an Orphan

           

           Agreatdealofbusinesswastransactedinthisshortperiod.Amongotheritems,MessrsPeddleandPool,solicitors,ofMonumentYard,wereinstructedbytheirclientEdwardDorrit,Esquire,toaddressalettertoMrArthurClennam,enclosingthesumoftwenty-fourpoundsnineshillingsandeightpence,beingtheamountofprincipalandinterestcomputedattherateoffivepercent.perannum,inwhichtheirclientbelievedhimselftobeindebtedtoMrClennam.Inmakingthiscommunicationandremittance,MessrsPeddleandPoolwerefurtherinstructedbytheirclienttoremindMrClennamthatthefavouroftheadvancenowrepaid(includinggate-fees)hadnotbeenaskedofhim,andtoinformhimthatitwouldnothavebeenacceptedifithadbeenopenlyprofferedinhisname.Withwhichtheyrequestedastampedreceipt,andremainedhisobedientservants.Agreatdealofbusinesshadlikewisetobedone,withintheso-soon-to-be-orphanedMarshalsea,byMrDorritsolongitsFather,chieflyarisingoutofapplicationsmadetohimbyCollegiansforsmallsumsofmoney.Totheseherespondedwiththegreatestliberality,andwithnolackofformality;alwaysfirstwritingtoappointatimeatwhichtheapplicantmightwaituponhiminhisroom,andthenreceivinghiminthemidstofavastaccumulationofdocuments,andaccompanyinghisdonation(forhesaidineverysuchcase,‘itisadonation,notaloan’)withagreatdealofgoodcounsel:totheeffectthathe,theexpiringFatheroftheMarshalsea,hopedtobelongremembered,asanexamplethatamanmightpreservehisownandthegeneralrespecteventhere.
