OnecomfortthatshehadundertheOrdealbyGeneralwasmoresustainingtoher,andmadehermoregratefulthantoalessdevotedandaffectionatespirit,nothabituatedtoherstrugglesandsacrifices,mightappearquitereasonable;and,indeed,itmayoftenbeobservedinlife,thatspiritslikeLittleDorritdonotappeartoreasonhalfascarefullyasthefolkswhogetthebetterofthem.ThecontinuedkindnessofhersisterwasthiscomforttoLittleDorrit.Itwasnothingtoherthatthekindnesstooktheformoftolerantpatronage;shewasusedtothat.Itwasnothingtoherthatitkeptherinatributaryposition,andshowedherinattendanceontheflamingcarinwhichMissFannysatonanelevatedseat,exactinghomage;shesoughtnobetterplace.
