Chapter 3. On the Road

           

           Thebrightmorningsundazzledtheeyes,thesnowhadceased,themistshadvanished,themountainairwassoclearandlightthatthenewsensationofbreathingitwaslikethehavingenteredonanewexistence.Tohelpthedelusion,thesolidgrounditselfseemedgone,andthemountain,ashiningwasteofimmensewhiteheapsandmasses,tobearegionofcloudfloatingbetweentheblueskyaboveandtheearthfarbelow.

           Somedarkspecksinthesnow,likeknotsuponalittlethread,beginningattheconventdoorandwindingawaydownthedescentinbrokenlengthswhichwerenotyetpiecedtogether,showedwheretheBrethrenwereatworkinseveralplacesclearingthetrack.Alreadythesnowhadbeguntobefoot-thawedagainaboutthedoor.Muleswerebusilybroughtout,tiedtotheringsinthewall,andladen;stringsofbellswerebuckledon,burdenswereadjusted,thevoicesofdriversandriderssoundedmusically.Someoftheearliesthadevenalreadyresumedtheirjourney;and,bothonthelevelsummitbythedarkwaterneartheconvent,andonthedownwardwayofyesterday’sascent,littlemovingfiguresofmenandmules,reducedtominiaturesbytheimmensityaround,wentwithacleartinklingofbellsandapleasantharmonyoftongues.

           Inthesupper-roomoflastnight,anewfire,pileduponthefeatheryashesoftheoldone,shoneuponahomelybreakfastofloaves,butter,andmilk.
