           Intheautumnoftheyear,DarknessandNightwerecreepinguptothehighestridgesoftheAlps.

           ItwasvintagetimeinthevalleysontheSwisssideofthePassoftheGreatSaintBernard,andalongthebanksoftheLakeofGeneva.Theairtherewaschargedwiththescentofgatheredgrapes.Baskets,troughs,andtubsofgrapesstoodinthedimvillagedoorways,stoppedthesteepandnarrowvillagestreets,andhadbeencarryingalldayalongtheroadsandlanes.Grapes,splitandcrushedunderfoot,layabouteverywhere.Thechildcarriedinaslingbytheladenpeasantwomantoilinghome,wasquietedwithpicked-upgrapes;theidiotsunninghisbiggoitreundertheleavesofthewoodenchaletbythewaytotheWaterfall,satmunchinggrapes;thebreathofthecowsandgoatswasredolentofleavesandstalksofgrapes;thecompanyineverylittlecabaretwereeating,drinking,talkinggrapes.Apitythatnoripetouchofthisgenerousabundancecouldbegiventothethin,hard,stonywine,whichafterallwasmadefromthegrapes!

           Theairhadbeenwarmandtransparentthroughthewholeofthebrightday.Shiningmetalspiresandchurch-roofs,distantandrarelyseen,hadsparkledintheview;andthesnowymountain-topshadbeensoclearthatunaccustomedeyes,cancellingtheinterveningcountry,andslightingtheirruggedheightsforsomethingfabulous,wouldhavemeasuredthemaswithinafewhourseasyreach.Mountain-peaksofgreatcelebrityinthevalleys,whencenotraceoftheirexistencewasvisiblesometimesformonthstogether,hadbeensincemorningplainandnearinthebluesky.
