           Afrequentlyrecurringdoubt,whetherMrPancks’sdesiretocollectinformationrelativetotheDorritfamilycouldhaveanypossiblebearingonthemisgivingshehadimpartedtohismotheronhisreturnfromhislongexile,causedArthurClennammuchuneasinessatthisperiod.WhatMrPancksalreadyknewabouttheDorritfamily,whatmorehereallywantedtofindout,andwhyheshouldtroublehisbusyheadaboutthematall,werequestionsthatoftenperplexedhim.MrPanckswasnotamantowastehistimeandtroubleinresearchespromptedbyidlecuriosity.ThathehadaspecificobjectClennamcouldnotdoubt.AndwhethertheattainmentofthatobjectbyMrPancks’sindustrymightbringtolight,insomeuntimelyway,secretreasonswhichhadinducedhismothertotakeLittleDorritbythehand,wasaseriousspeculation.

           Notthatheeverwaveredeitherinhisdesireorhisdeterminationtorepairawrongthathadbeendoneinhisfather’stime,shouldawrongcometolight,andbereparable.Theshadowofasupposedactofinjustice,whichhadhungoverhimsincehisfather’sdeath,wassovagueandformlessthatitmightbetheresultofarealitywidelyremotefromhisideaofit.But,ifhisapprehensionsshouldprovetobewellfounded,hewasreadyatanymomenttolaydownallhehad,andbegintheworldanew.Asthefiercedarkteachingofhischildhoodhadneversunkintohisheart,sothatfirstarticleinhiscodeofmoralswas,thathemustbegin,inpracticalhumility,withlookingwelltohisfeetonEarth,andthathecouldnevermountonwingsofwordstoHeaven.
