Chapter 36. The Marshalsea becomes an Orphan

           

           TheCollegianswerenotenvious.BesidesthattheyhadapersonalandtraditionalregardforaCollegianofsomanyyears’standing,theeventwascreditabletotheCollege,andmadeitfamousinthenewspapers.Perhapsmoreofthemthought,too,thanwerequiteawareofit,thatthethingmightinthelotteryofchanceshavehappenedtothemselves,orthatsomethingofthesortmightyethappentothemselvessomedayorother.Theytookitverywell.Afewwerelowatthethoughtofbeingleftbehind,andbeingleftpoor;buteventhesedidnotgrudgethefamilytheirbrilliantreverse.Theremighthavebeenmuchmoreenvyinpoliterplaces.ItseemsprobablethatmediocrityoffortunewouldhavebeendisposedtobelessmagnanimousthantheCollegians,wholivedfromhandtomouth—fromthepawnbroker’shandtotheday’sdinner.

           Theygotupanaddresstohim,whichtheypresentedinaneatframeandglass(thoughitwasnotafterwardsdisplayedinthefamilymansionorpreservedamongthefamilypapers);andtowhichhereturnedagraciousanswer.Inthatdocumentheassuredthem,inaRoyalmanner,thathereceivedtheprofessionoftheirattachmentwithafullconvictionofitssincerity;andagaingenerallyexhortedthemtofollowhisexample—which,atleastinsofarascomingintoagreatpropertywasconcerned,thereisnodoubttheywouldhavegladlyimitated.
