Chapter 36. The Marshalsea becomes an Orphan

           MrDorritthankedhimatthemoment,andrepliedthathewouldthinkofit;buttheMarshalwasnosoonergonethanhesatdownandwrotehimacuttingnote,inwhichheremarkedthathehadneveronanyformeroccasionhadthehonourofreceivinghiscongratulations(whichwastrue,thoughindeedtherehadnotbeenanythingparticulartocongratulatehimupon),andthathebegged,onbehalfofhimselfandfamily,torepudiatetheMarshal’soffer,withallthosethankswhichitsdisinterestedcharacteranditsperfectindependenceofallworldlyconsiderationsdemanded.

           Althoughhisbrothershowedsodimaglimmeringofinterestintheiralteredfortunesthatitwasverydoubtfulwhetherheunderstoodthem,MrDorritcausedhimtobemeasuredfornewraimentbythehosiers,tailors,hatters,andbootmakerswhomhecalledinforhimself;andorderedthathisoldclothesshouldbetakenfromhimandburned.MissFannyandMrTiprequirednodirectioninmakinganappearanceofgreatfashionandelegance;andthethreepassedthisintervaltogetheratthebesthotelintheneighbourhood—thoughtruly,asMissFannysaid,thebestwasveryindifferent.Inconnectionwiththatestablishment,MrTiphiredacabriolet,horse,andgroom,averyneatturnout,whichwasusuallytobeobservedfortwoorthreehoursatatimegracingtheBoroughHighStreet,outsidetheMarshalseacourt-yard.Amodestlittlehiredchariotandpairwasalsofrequentlytobeseenthere;inalightingfromandenteringwhichvehicle,MissFannyflutteredtheMarshal’sdaughtersbythedisplayofinaccessiblebonnets.
