           AstrangeperiodbeganforRaskolnikov:itwasasthoughafoghadfallenuponhimandwrappedhiminadrearysolitudefromwhichtherewasnoescape.Recallingthatperiodlongafter,hebelievedthathismindhadbeencloudedattimes,andthatithadcontinuedso,withintervals,tillthefinalcatastrophe.Hewasconvincedthathehadbeenmistakenaboutmanythingsatthattime,forinstanceastothedateofcertainevents.Anyway,whenhetriedlaterontopiecehisrecollectionstogether,helearntagreatdealabouthimselffromwhatotherpeopletoldhim.Hehadmixedupincidentsandhadexplainedeventsasduetocircumstanceswhichexistedonlyinhisimagination.Attimeshewasapreytoagoniesofmorbiduneasiness,amountingsometimestopanic.Butheremembered,too,moments,hours,perhapswholedays,ofcompleteapathy,whichcameuponhimasareactionfromhispreviousterrorandmightbecomparedwiththeabnormalinsensibility,sometimesseeninthedying.Heseemedtobetryinginthatlatterstagetoescapefromafullandclearunderstandingofhisposition.Certainessentialfactswhichrequiredimmediateconsiderationwereparticularlyirksometohim.Howgladhewouldhavebeentobefreefromsomecares,theneglectofwhichwouldhavethreatenedhimwithcomplete,inevitableruin.

           HewasparticularlyworriedaboutSvidrigaïlov,hemightbesaidtobepermanentlythinkingofSvidrigaïlov.
