Thisundevelopedwasthepossibility,whichRichardSwivellersoughttoconcealevenfromhimself,ofhisnotbeingproofagainstthecharmsofMissWackles,andinsomeunguardedmoment,bylinkinghisfortunestohersforever,ofputtingitoutofhisownpowertofurthertheirnotableschemetowhichhehadsoreadilybecomeaparty.Forallthesereasons,hedecidedtopickaquarrelwithMissWackleswithoutdelay,andcastingaboutforapretextdeterminedinfavourofgroundlessjealousy.Havingmadeuphismindonthisimportantpoint,hecirculatedtheglass(fromhisrighthandtoleft,andbackagain)prettyfreely,toenablehimtoacthispartwiththegreaterdiscretion,andthen,aftermakingsomeslightimprovementsinhistoilet,benthisstepstowardsthespothallowedbythefairobjectofhismeditations.
