Fortheyoungmanhimself,heriotedabroadforabriefterm,livingbyhiswits—whichmeansbytheabuseofeveryfacultythatworthilyemployedraisesmanabovethebeasts,andsodegraded,sinkshimfarbelowthem.Itwasnotlongbeforehisbodywasrecognisedbyastranger,whochancedtovisitthathospitalinPariswherethedrownedarelaidouttobeowned;despitethebruisesanddisfigurementswhichweresaidtohavebeenoccasionedbysomepreviousscuffle.Butthestrangerkepthisowncounseluntilhereturnedhome,anditwasneverclaimedorcaredfor.
Theyoungerbrother,orthesinglegentleman,forthatdesignationismorefamiliar,wouldhavedrawnthepoorschoolmasterfromhisloneretreat,andmadehimhiscompanionandfriend.Butthehumblevillageteacherwastimidofventuringintothenoisyworld,andhadbecomefondofhisdwellingintheoldchurchyard.Calmlyhappyinhisschool,andinthespot,andintheattachmentofHerlittlemourner,hepursuedhisquietcourseinpeace;andwas,throughtherighteousgratitudeofhisfriend—letthisbriefmentionsufficeforthat—aPOORschool-masternomore.
