           Oldmenwerethere,whoseeyesweredimandsensesfailinggrandmothers,whomighthavediedtenyearsago,andstillbeenoldthedeaf,theblind,thelame,thepalsied,thelivingdeadinmanyshapesandforms,toseetheclosingofthatearlygrave.Whatwasthedeathitwouldshutin,tothatwhichstillcouldcrawlandcreepaboveit!

           Alongthecrowdedpaththeyborehernow;pureasthenewly-fallensnowthatcoveredit;whosedayonearthhadbeenasfleeting.Undertheporch,whereshehadsatwhenHeaveninitsmercybroughthertothatpeacefulspot,shepassedagain;andtheoldchurchreceivedherinitsquietshade.

           Theycarriedhertooneoldnook,whereshehadmanyandmanyatimesatmusing,andlaidtheirburdensoftlyonthepavement.Thelightstreamedonitthroughthecolouredwindowawindow,wheretheboughsoftreeswereeverrustlinginthesummer,andwherethebirdssangsweetlyalldaylong.Witheverybreathofairthatstirredamongthosebranchesinthesunshine,sometrembling,changinglight,wouldfalluponhergrave.

           Earthtoearth,ashestoashes,dusttodust!Manyayounghanddroppedinitslittlewreath,manyastifledsobwasheard.Someandtheywerenotafewkneltdown.Allweresincereandtruthfulintheirsorrow.
