           SometimestowardstheendofalongstageKitcouldnothelpwishingitwerealittlewarmer:butwhentheystoppedtochangehorses,andhehadhadagoodrun,andwhatwiththat,andthebustleofpayingtheoldpostilion,androusingthenewone,andrunningtoandfroagainuntilthehorseswereputto,hewassowarmthatthebloodtingledandsmartedinhisfingers’endsthen,hefeltasiftohaveitonedegreelesscoldwouldbetolosehalfthedelightandgloryofthejourney:anduphejumpedagain,rightcheerily,singingtothemerrymusicofthewheelsastheyrolledaway,and,leavingthetownspeopleintheirwarmbeds,pursuedtheircoursealongthelonelyroad.

           Meantimethetwogentlemeninside,whowerelittledisposedtosleep,beguiledthetimewithconversation.Asbothwereanxiousandexpectant,itnaturallyturneduponthesubjectoftheirexpedition,onthemannerinwhichithadbeenbroughtabout,andonthehopesandfearstheyentertainedrespectingit.Oftheformertheyhadmany,ofthelatterfewnoneperhapsbeyondthatindefinableuneasinesswhichisinseparablefromsuddenlyawakenedhope,andprotractedexpectation.

           Inoneofthepausesoftheirdiscourse,andwhenhalfthenighthadwornaway,thesinglegentleman,whohadgraduallybecomemoreandmoresilentandthoughtful,turnedtohiscompanionandsaidabruptly:

           ‘Areyouagoodlistener?’

           ‘Likemostothermen,Isuppose,’returnedMrGarland,smiling.‘Icanbe,ifIaminterested;andifnotinterested,Ishouldstilltrytoappearso.
