           Parties,too,wouldcometoseethechurch;andthosewhocame,speakingtoothersofthechild,sentmore;soevenatthatseasonoftheyeartheyhadvisitorsalmostdaily.Theoldmanwouldfollowthematalittledistancethroughthebuilding,listeningtothevoicehelovedsowell;andwhenthestrangersleft,andpartedfromNell,hewouldminglewiththemtocatchupfragmentsoftheirconversation;orhewouldstandforthesamepurpose,withhisgreyheaduncovered,atthegateastheypassedthrough.

           Theyalwayspraisedthechild,hersenseandbeauty,andhewasproudtohearthem!Butwhatwasthat,sooftenadded,whichwrunghisheart,andmadehimsobandweepalone,insomedullcorner!Alas!evencarelessstrangerstheywhohadnofeelingforher,buttheinterestofthemomenttheywhowouldgoawayandforgetnextweekthatsuchabeinglivedeventheysawiteventheypitiedhereventheybadehimgooddaycompassionately,andwhisperedastheypassed.

           Thepeopleofthevillage,too,ofwhomtherewasnotonebutgrewtohaveafondnessforpoorNell;evenamongthem,therewasthesamefeeling;atendernesstowardsheracompassionateregardforher,increasingeveryday.Theveryschoolboys,light-heartedandthoughtlessastheywere,eventheycaredforher.Theroughestamongthemwassorryifhemissedherintheusualplaceuponhiswaytoschool,andwouldturnoutofthepathtoaskforheratthelatticedwindow.Ifsheweresittinginthechurch,theyperhapsmightpeepinsoftlyattheopendoor;buttheyneverspoketoher,unlesssheroseandwenttospeaktothem.
