           Theplacethroughwhichhemadehiswayatleisurewasoneofthosereceptaclesforoldandcuriousthingswhichseemtocrouchinoddcornersofthistownandtohidetheirmustytreasuresfromthepubliceyeinjealousyanddistrust.Thereweresuitsofmailstandinglikeghostsinarmourhereandthere,fantasticcarvingsbroughtfrommonkishcloisters,rustyweaponsofvariouskinds,distortedfiguresinchinaandwoodandironandivory:tapestryandstrangefurniturethatmighthavebeendesignedindreams.Thehaggardaspectofthelittleoldmanwaswonderfullysuitedtotheplace;hemighthavegropedamongoldchurchesandtombsanddesertedhousesandgatheredallthespoilswithhisownhands.
