           Havingnowdisburdenedhimselfofhisgreatsurprise,theschoolmastersatdown,anddrawingNelltohisside,toldherhowhehadlearntthatancienttenementhadbeenoccupiedforaverylongtimebyanoldperson,nearlyahundredyearsofage,whokeptthekeysofthechurch,openedandcloseditfortheservices,andshowedittostrangers;howshehaddiednotmanyweeksago,andnobodyhadyetbeenfoundtofilltheoffice;how,learningallthisinaninterviewwiththesexton,whowasconfinedtohisbedbyrheumatism,hehadbeenboldtomakementionofhisfellow-traveller,whichhadbeensofavourablyreceivedbythathighauthority,thathehadtakencourage,actingonhisadvice,topropoundthemattertotheclergyman.Inaword,theresultofhisexertionswas,thatNellandhergrandfatherweretobecarriedbeforethelast-namedgentlemannextday;and,hisapprovaloftheirconductandappearancereservedasamatterofform,thattheywerealreadyappointedtothevacantpost.
