Thebrokenfiguressupportingtheburdenofthechimney-piece,thoughmutilated,werestilldistinguishableforwhattheyhadbeen—fardifferentfromthedustwithout—andshowedsadlybytheemptyhearth,likecreatureswhohadoutlivedtheirkind,andmournedtheirowntooslowdecay.

Anopendoorleadingtoasmallroomorcell,dimwiththelightthatcamethroughleavesofivy,completedtheinteriorofthisportionoftheruin.Itwasnotquitedestituteoffurniture.Afewstrangechairs,whosearmsandlegslookedasthoughtheyhaddwindledawaywithage;atable,theveryspectreofitsrace:agreatoldchestthathadonceheldrecordsinthechurch,withotherquaintly-fashioneddomesticnecessaries,andstoreoffire-woodforthewinter,werescatteredaround,andgaveevidenttokensofitsoccupationasadwelling-placeatnoverydistanttime.
