           Butnight-timeinthisdreadfulspot!night,whenthesmokewaschangedtofire;wheneverychimneyspiritedupitsflame;andplaces,thathadbeendarkvaultsallday,nowshonered-hot,withfiguresmovingtoandfrowithintheirblazingjaws,andcallingtooneanotherwithhoarsecriesnight,whenthenoiseofeverystrangemachinewasaggravatedbythedarkness;whenthepeoplenearthemlookedwilderandmoresavage;whenbandsofunemployedlabourersparadedtheroads,orclusteredbytorch-lightroundtheirleaders,whotoldthem,insternlanguage,oftheirwrongs,andurgedthemontofrightfulcriesandthreats;whenmaddenedmen,armedwithswordandfirebrand,spurningthetearsandprayersofwomenwhowouldrestrainthem,rushedforthonerrandsofterroranddestruction,toworknoruinhalfsosurelyastheirownnight,whencartscamerumblingby,filledwithrudecoffins(forcontagiousdiseaseanddeathhadbeenbusywiththelivingcrops);whenorphanscried,anddistractedwomenshriekedandfollowedintheirwakenight,whensomecalledforbread,andsomefordrinktodrowntheircares,andsomewithtears,andsomewithstaggeringfeet,andsomewithbloodshoteyes,wentbroodinghomenight,which,unlikethenightthatHeavensendsonearth,broughtwithitnopeace,norquiet,norsignsofblessedsleepwhoshalltelltheterrorsofthenighttotheyoungwanderingchild!
