           Whensheawokeagain,broaddaywasshiningthroughtheloftyopeningsinthewalls,and,stealinginslantingraysbutmidwaydown,seemedtomakethebuildingdarkerthanithadbeenatnight.Theclangandtumultwerestillgoingon,andtheremorselessfireswereburningfiercelyasbefore;forfewchangesofnightanddaybroughtrestorquietthere.

           Herfriendpartedhisbreakfastascantymessofcoffeeandsomecoarsebreadwiththechildandhergrandfather,andinquiredwhithertheyweregoing.Shetoldhimthattheysoughtsomedistantcountryplaceremotefromtownsorevenothervillages,andwithafalteringtongueinquiredwhatroadtheywoulddobesttotake.
