           Themanwhohadbeenwatchingthisfire,andwhosetaskwasendedforthepresent,gladlywithdrew,andleftthemwiththeirfriend,who,spreadingNell’slittlecloakuponaheapofashes,andshowingherwhereshecouldhangherouter-clothestodry,signedtoherandtheoldmantoliedownandsleep.Forhimself,hetookhisstationonaruggedmatbeforethefurnace-door,andrestinghischinuponhishands,watchedtheflameasitshonethroughtheironchinks,andthewhiteashesastheyfellintotheirbrighthotgravebelow.

           Itwasyetnightwhensheawoke,nordidsheknowhowlong,orforhowshortatime,shehadslept.Butshefoundherselfprotected,bothfromanycoldairthatmightfinditswayintothebuilding,andfromthescorchingheat,bysomeoftheworkmen’sclothes;andglancingattheirfriendsawthathesatinexactlythesameattitude,lookingwithafixedearnestnessofattentiontowardsthefire,andkeepingsoverystillthathedidnotevenseemtobreathe.Shelayinthestatebetweensleepingandwaking,lookingsolongathismotionlessfigurethatatlengthshealmostfearedhehaddiedashesatthere;andsoftlyrisinganddrawingclosetohim,venturedtowhisperinhisear.
