           Onafinedaytheywerequiteafamilyparty;theoldladysittinghardbywithherwork-basketonalittletable;theoldgentlemandigging,orpruning,orclippingaboutwithalargepairofshears,orhelpingKitinsomewayorotherwithgreatassiduity;andWhiskerlookingonfromhispaddockinplacidcontemplationofthemall.To-daytheyweretotrimthegrape-vine,soKitmountedhalf-wayupashortladder,andbegantosnipandhammeraway,whiletheoldgentleman,withagreatinterestinhisproceedings,handedupthenailsandshredsofclothashewantedthem.TheoldladyandWhiskerlookedonasusual.

           ‘Well,Christopher,’saidMrGarland,‘andsoyouhavemadeanewfriend,eh?’

           ‘Ibegyourpardon,Sir?’returnedKit,lookingdownfromtheladder.

           ‘Indeed,Sir!It’sverykindinhim,butIdon’twanthimto,I’msure,’saidKit,hammeringstoutlyatanobduratenail.

           ‘Heisratheranxious,’pursuedtheoldgentleman,‘tohaveyouinhisownservicetakecarewhatyou’redoing,oryouwillfalldownandhurtyourself.’
