           ‘Ihavebeenmakinginquiriesintheneighbourhoodinwhichhisoldmasterlived,’saidthestranger,‘andIlearnthathewasservedbythislad.Ihavefoundouthismother’shouse,andhavebeendirectedbyhertothisplaceasthenearestinwhichIshouldbelikelytofindhim.That’sthecauseofmypresentingmyselfherethismorning.’

           ‘Iamverygladofanycause,sir,’saidtheNotary,‘whichprocuresmethehonourofthisvisit.’

           ‘Sir,’retortedthestranger,‘youspeaklikeameremanoftheworld,andIthinkyousomethingbetter.Therefore,praydonotsinkyourrealcharacterinpayingunmeaningcomplimentstome.’

           ‘Hem!’coughedtheNotary.‘You’reaplainspeaker,sir.’

           ‘Andaplaindealer,’returnedthestranger.‘Itmaybemylongabsenceandinexperiencethatleadmetotheconclusion;butifplainspeakersarescarceinthispartoftheworld,Ifancyplaindealersarestillscarcer.Ifmyspeakingshouldoffendyou,sir,mydealing,Ihope,willmakeamends.’

           MrWitherdenseemedalittledisconcertedbytheelderlygentleman’smodeofconductingthedialogue;andasforKit,helookedathiminopen-mouthedastonishment:wonderingwhatkindoflanguagehewouldaddresstohim,ifhetalkedinthatfreeandeasywaytoaNotary.Itwaswithnoharshness,however,thoughwithsomethingofconstitutionalirritabilityandhaste,thatheturnedtoKitandsaid:

           ‘Ifyouthink,mylad,thatIampursuingtheseinquirieswithanyotherviewthanthatofservingandreclaimingthoseIaminsearchof,youdomeaverygreatwrong,anddeceiveyourself.
