           Having,asitwere,takenformalpossessionofhisclerkshipinvirtueoftheseproceedings,heopenedthewindowandleanednegligentlyoutofituntilabeer-boyhappenedtopass,whomhecommandedtosetdownhistrayandtoservehimwithapintofmildporter,whichhedrankuponthespotandpromptlypaidfor,withtheviewofbreakinggroundforasystemoffuturecreditandopeningacorrespondencetendingthereto,withoutlossoftime.Then,threeorfourlittleboysdroppedin,onlegalerrandsfromthreeorfourattorneysoftheBrassgrade:whomMrSwivellerreceivedanddismissedwithaboutasprofessionalamanner,andascorrectandcomprehensiveanunderstandingoftheirbusiness,aswouldhavebeenshownbyaclowninapantomimeundersimilarcircumstances.Thesethingsdoneandover,hegotuponhisstoolagainandtriedhishandatdrawingcaricaturesofMissBrasswithapenandink,whistlingverycheerfullyallthetime.
