           ‘Butlistentome,’saidthechildearnestly,‘willyoulistentome?’

           ‘Aye,aye,I’lllisten,’returnedtheoldman,stillwithoutlookingather;‘aprettyvoice.Ithasalwaysasweetsoundtome.Italwayshadwhenitwashermother’s,poorchild.’

           ‘Letmepersuadeyou,thenoh,doletmepersuadeyou,’saidthechild,‘tothinknomoreofgainsorlosses,andtotrynofortunebutthefortunewepursuetogether.’

           ‘Wepursuethisaimtogether,’retortedhergrandfather,stilllookingawayandseemingtoconferwithhimself.‘Whoseimagesanctifiesthegame?’

           ‘Havewebeenworseoff,’resumedthechild,‘sinceyouforgotthesecares,andwehavebeentravellingontogether?Havewenotbeenmuchbetterandhappierwithoutahometoshelterus,thaneverwewereinthatunhappyhouse,whentheywereonyourmind?’

           ‘Shespeaksthetruth,’murmuredtheoldmaninthesametoneasbefore.‘Itmustnotturnme,butitisthetruth;nodoubtitis.
