           ‘Weweretherequitebyaccident,’returnedNell,confusedbythisabruptquestioning.‘Wearepoorpeople,ma’am,andareonlywanderingabout.Wehavenothingtodo;Iwishwehad.’

           ‘Youamazememoreandmore,’saidMrsJarley,afterremainingforsometimeasmuteasoneofherownfigures.‘Why,whatdoyoucallyourselves?Notbeggars?’

           ‘Indeed,ma’am,Idon’tknowwhatelseweare,’returnedthechild.

           ‘Lordblessme,’saidtheladyofthecaravan.‘Ineverheardofsuchathing.Who’dhavethoughtit!’

           Sheremainedsolongsilentafterthisexclamation,thatNellfearedshefeltherhavingbeeninducedtobestowherprotectionandconversationupononesopoor,tobeanoutrageuponherdignitythatnothingcouldrepair.Thispersuasionwasratherconfirmedthanotherwisebythetoneinwhichsheatlengthbrokesilenceandsaid,

           ‘Andyetyoucanread.Andwritetoo,Ishouldn’twonder?’

           ‘Yes,ma’am,’saidthechild,fearfulofgivingnewoffencebytheconfession.

           ‘Well,andwhatathingthatis,’returnedMrsJarley.‘Ican’t!’

           Nellsaid‘indeed’inatonewhichmightimply,eitherthatshewasreasonablysurprisedtofindthegenuineandonlyJarley,whowasthedelightoftheNobilityandGentryandthepeculiarpetoftheRoyalFamily,destituteofthesefamiliararts;orthatshepresumedsogreataladycouldscarcelystandinneedofsuchordinaryaccomplishments.
