           Whenshehadtakenthisgentleexerciseforsometime,shesatdownuponthestepsandcalled‘George’;whereuponamaninacarter’sfrock,whohadbeensoshroudedinahedgeuptothistimeastoseeeverythingthatpassedwithoutbeingseenhimself,partedthetwigsthatconcealedhim,andappearedinasittingattitude,supportingonhislegsabaking-dishandahalf-gallonstonebottle,andbearinginhisrighthandaknife,andinhisleftafork.

           ‘Yes,Missus,’saidGeorge.

           ‘Howdidyoufindthecoldpie,George?’

           ‘Itwarn’tamiss,mum.’

           ‘Andthebeer,’saidtheladyofthecaravan,withanappearanceofbeingmoreinterestedinthisquestionthanthelast;‘isitpassable,George?’

           ‘It’smoreflattererthanitmightbe,’Georgereturned,‘butitan’tsobadforallthat.’

           Tosetthemindofhismistressatrest,hetookasip(amountinginquantitytoapintorthereabouts)fromthestonebottle,andthensmackedhislips,winkedhiseye,andnoddedhishead.Nodoubtwiththesameamiabledesire,heimmediatelyresumedhisknifeandfork,asapracticalassurancethatthebeerhadwroughtnobadeffectuponhisappetite.

           Theladyofthecaravanlookedonapprovinglyforsometime,andthensaid,

           ‘Haveyounearlyfinished?’

           ‘Werynigh,mum.
