Noneknewthisbetterthantheidlestboys,who,growingbolderwithimpunity,waxedlouderandmoredaring;playingodd-or-evenunderthemaster’seye,eatingapplesopenlyandwithoutrebuke,pinchingeachotherinsportormalicewithouttheleastreserve,andcuttingtheirautographsintheverylegsofhisdesk.Thepuzzleddunce,whostoodbesideittosayhislessonoutofbook,lookednolongerattheceilingforforgottenwords,butdrewclosertothemaster’selbowandboldlycasthiseyeuponthepage;thewagofthelittletroopsquintedandmadegrimaces(atthesmallestboyofcourse),holdingnobookbeforehisface,andhisapprovingaudienceknewnoconstraintintheirdelight.Ifthemasterdidchancetorousehimselfandseemalivetowhatwasgoingon,thenoisesubsidedforamomentandnoeyesmethisbutworeastudiousandadeeplyhumblelook;buttheinstantherelapsedagain,itbrokeoutafresh,andtentimeslouderthanbefore.
