           MightygladMrQuilpwastoseethem,ormightilygladheseemedtobe;andfearfullypoliteMrQuilpwastoMrsQuilpandMrsJiniwin;andverysharpwasthelookhecastonhiswifetoobservehowshewasaffectedbytherecognitionofyoungTrent.MrsQuilpwasasinnocentasherownmotherofanyemotion,painfulorpleasant,whichthesightofhimawakened,butasherhusband’sglancemadehertimidandconfused,anduncertainwhattodoorwhatwasrequiredofher,MrQuilpdidnotfailtoassignherembarrassmenttothecausehehadinhismind,andwhilehechuckledathispenetrationwassecretlyexasperatedbyhisjealousy.

           Nothingofthisappeared,however.Onthecontrary,MrQuilpwasallblandnessandsuavity,andpresidedoverthecase-bottleofrumwithextraordinaryopen-heartedness.

           ‘Why,letmesee,’saidQuilp.‘Itmustbeamatterofnearlytwoyearssincewewerefirstacquainted.’

           ‘Nearerthree,Ithink,’saidTrent.

           ‘Nearerthree!’criedQuilp.‘Howfasttimeflies.Doesitseemaslongasthattoyou,MrsQuilp?’

           ‘Yes,Ithinkitseemsfullthreeyears,Quilp,’wastheunfortunatereply.

           ‘Ohindeed,ma’am,’thoughtQuilp,‘youhavebeenpining,haveyou?Verygood,ma’am.’

           ‘ItseemstomebutyesterdaythatyouwentouttoDemeraraintheMaryAnne,’saidQuilp;‘butyesterday,Ideclare.Well,Ilikealittlewildness.Iwaswildmyselfonce.
