           MrSwivellercomplied,andlookingabouthimwithapropitiatorysmile,observedthatlastweekwasafineweekfortheducks,andthisweekwasafineweekforthedust;healsoobservedthatwhilststandingbythepostatthestreet-corner,hehadobservedapigwithastrawinhismouthissuingoutofthetobacco-shop,fromwhichappearanceheauguredthatanotherfineweekfortheduckswasapproaching,andthatrainwouldcertainlyensue.Hefurthermoretookoccasiontoapologizeforanynegligencethatmightbeperceptibleinhisdress,onthegroundthatlastnighthehadhad‘thesunverystronginhiseyes’;bywhichexpressionhewasunderstoodtoconveytohishearersinthemostdelicatemannerpossible,theinformationthathehadbeenextremelydrunk.

           ‘Butwhat,’saidMrSwivellerwithasigh,‘whatistheoddssolongasthefireofsouliskindledatthetaperofconwiviality,andthewingoffriendshipnevermoultsafeather!Whatistheoddssolongasthespiritisexpandedbymeansofrosywine,andthepresentmomentistheleasthappiestofourexistence!’

           ‘Youneedn’tactthechairmanhere,’saidhisfriend,halfaside.

           ‘Fred!’criedMrSwiveller,tappinghisnose,‘awordtothewiseissufficientforthemwemaybegoodandhappywithoutriches,Fred.Saynotanothersyllable.Iknowmycue;smartistheword.Onlyonelittlewhisper,Fredistheoldminfriendly?’

           ‘Neveryoumind,’repliedhisfriend.
