           Itwassometwominutesafterthetimewhenhereachedthespot,whichwasaconsiderabledistancefromhishome,butbygreatgoodluckthelittleoldgentlemanhadnotyetarrived;atleasttherewasnopony-chaisetobeseen,anditwasnotlikelythathehadcomeandgoneagaininsoshortaspace.Greatlyrelievedtofindthathewasnottoolate,Kitleantagainstalamp-posttotakebreath,andwaitedtheadventoftheponyandhischarge.

           Sureenough,beforelongtheponycametrottingroundthecornerofthestreet,lookingasobstinateasponymight,andpickinghisstepsasifhewerespyingaboutforthecleanestplaces,andwouldbynomeansdirtyhisfeetorhurryhimselfinconveniently.Behindtheponysatthelittleoldgentleman,andbytheoldgentleman’ssidesatthelittleoldlady,carryingjustsuchanosegayasshehadbroughtbefore.

           Theoldgentleman,theoldlady,thepony,andthechaise,cameupthestreetinperfectunanimity,untiltheyarrivedwithinsomehalfadozendoorsoftheNotary’shouse,whenthepony,deceivedbyabrass-platebeneathatailor’sknocker,cametoahalt,andmaintainedbyasturdysilence,thatthatwasthehousetheywanted.

           Theponylookedwithgreatattentionintoafire-plugwhichwasnearhim,andappearedtobequiteabsorbedincontemplatingit.

           ‘Ohdear,suchanaughtyWhisker!’criedtheoldlady.‘Afterbeingsogoodtoo,andcomingalongsowell!Iamquiteashamedofhim.Idon’tknowwhatwearetodowithhim,Ireallydon’t.
