Althoughthereweremanypeoplehere,noneofthebestfavouredorbestclad,busilyerectingtentsanddrivingstakesintheground,andhurryingtoandfrowithdustyfeetandmanyagrumbledoath—althoughthereweretiredchildrencradledonheapsofstrawbetweenthewheelsofcarts,cryingthemselvestosleep—andpoorleanhorsesanddonkeysjustturnedloose,grazingamongthemenandwomen,andpotsandkettles,andhalf-lightedfires,andendsofcandlesflaringandwastingintheair—forallthis,thechildfeltitanescapefromthetownanddrewherbreathmorefreely.Afterascantysupper,thepurchaseofwhichreducedherlittlestocksolow,thatshehadonlyafewhalfpencewithwhichtobuyabreakfastonthemorrow,sheandtheoldmanlaydowntorestinacornerofatent,andslept,despitethebusypreparationsthatweregoingonaroundthemallnightlong.
