Thesewerenootherthanfourverydismaldogs,whocamepatteringinoneaftertheother,headedbyanoldbandydogofparticularlymournfulaspect,who,stoppingwhenthelastofhisfollowershadgotasfarasthedoor,erectedhimselfuponhishindlegsandlookedroundathiscompanions,whoimmediatelystoodupontheirhindlegs,inagraveandmelancholyrow.Norwasthistheonlyremarkablecircumstanceaboutthesedogs,foreachofthemworeakindoflittlecoatofsomegaudycolourtrimmedwithtarnishedspangles,andoneofthemhadacapuponhishead,tiedverycarefullyunderhischin,whichhadfallendownuponhisnoseandcompletelyobscuredoneeye;addtothis,thatthegaudycoatswereallwetthroughanddiscolouredwithrain,andthatthewearersweresplashedanddirty,andsomeideamaybeformedoftheunusualappearanceofthesenewvisitorstotheJollySandboys.
NeitherShortnorthelandlordnorThomasCodlin,however,wasintheleastsurprised,merelyremarkingthatthesewereJerry’sdogsandthatJerrycouldnotbefarbehind.Sotherethedogsstood,patientlywinkingandgapingandlookingextremelyhardattheboilingpot,untilJerryhimselfappeared,whentheyalldroppeddownatonceandwalkedabouttheroomintheirnaturalmanner.Thispostureitmustbeconfesseddidnotmuchimprovetheirappearance,astheirownpersonaltailsandtheircoattails—bothcapitalthingsintheirway—didnotagreetogether.
