           MrCodlinfollowedwithawillingmind,andsoonfoundthatthelandlordhadnotcommendedhispreparationswithoutgoodreason.Amightyfirewasblazingonthehearthandroaringupthewidechimneywithacheerfulsound,whichalargeironcauldron,bubblingandsimmeringintheheat,lentitspleasantaidtoswell.Therewasadeepredruddyblushupontheroom,andwhenthelandlordstirredthefire,sendingtheflamesskippingandleapingupwhenhetookoffthelidoftheironpotandthererushedoutasavourysmell,whilethebubblingsoundgrewdeeperandmorerich,andanunctuoussteamcamefloatingout,hanginginadeliciousmistabovetheirheadswhenhedidthis,MrCodlin’sheartwastouched.Hesatdowninthechimney-cornerandsmiled.

           MrCodlinsatsmilinginthechimney-corner,eyeingthelandlordaswitharoguishlookheheldthecoverinhishand,and,feigningthathisdoingsowasneedfultothewelfareofthecookery,sufferedthedelightfulsteamtoticklethenostrilsofhisguest.Theglowofthefirewasuponthelandlord’sbaldhead,anduponhistwinklingeye,anduponhiswateringmouth,anduponhispimpledface,anduponhisroundfatfigure.MrCodlindrewhissleeveacrosshislips,andsaidinamurmuringvoice,‘Whatisit?’

           ‘It’sastewoftripe,’saidthelandlordsmackinghislips,‘andcow-heel,’smackingthemagain,‘andbacon,’smackingthemoncemore,‘andsteak,’smackingthemforthefourthtime,‘andpeas,cauliflowers,newpotatoes,andsparrow-grass,allworkinguptogetherinonedeliciousgravy.
