           Theyraisedtheireyeswhentheoldmanandhisyoungcompanionwerecloseuponthem,andpausingintheirwork,returnedtheirlooksofcuriosity.Oneofthem,theactualexhibitornodoubt,wasalittlemerry-facedmanwithatwinklingeyeandarednose,whoseemedtohaveunconsciouslyimbibedsomethingofhishero’scharacter.Theotherthatwashewhotookthemoneyhadratheracarefulandcautiouslook,whichwasperhapsinseparablefromhisoccupationalso.

           ‘No!’criedtheoldman,makingsignstoNelltolisten,‘whynot,eh?whynot?’

           ‘Becauseitwoulddestroyallthedelusion,andtakeawayalltheinterest,wouldn’tit?’repliedthelittleman.‘Wouldyoucareaha’pennyfortheLordChancellorifyouknow’dhiminprivateandwithouthiswig?certainlynot.’

           ‘Good!’saidtheoldman,venturingtotouchoneofthepuppets,anddrawingawayhishandwithashrilllaugh.
