           ‘Areyoutired?’saidthechild,‘areyousureyoudon’tfeelillfromthislongwalk?’

           Helaidhisheaduponhershoulderandmoanedpiteously.Thetimehadbeen,andaveryfewdaysbefore,whenthechildcouldnothaverestrainedhertearsandmusthaveweptwithhim.Butnowshesoothedhimwithgentleandtenderwords,smiledathisthinkingtheycouldeverpart,andralliedhimcheerfullyuponthejest.Hewassooncalmedandfellasleep,singingtohimselfinalowvoice,likealittlechild.

           Heawokerefreshed,andtheycontinuedtheirjourney.Theroadwaspleasant,lyingbetweenbeautifulpasturesandfieldsofcorn,aboutwhich,poisedhighintheclearbluesky,thelarktrilledoutherhappysong.
