           Tothesesucceededpertcottages,twoandtwowithplotsofgroundinfront,laidoutinangularbedswithstiffboxbordersandnarrowpathsbetween,wherefootstepneverstrayedtomakethegravelrough.Thencamethepublic-house,freshlypaintedingreenandwhite,withtea-gardensandabowlinggreen,spurningitsoldneighbourwiththehorse-troughwherethewaggonsstopped;then,fields;andthen,somehouses,onebyone,ofgoodlysizewithlawns,someevenwithalodgewheredweltaporterandhiswife.Thencameaturnpike;thenfieldsagainwithtreesandhay-stacks;then,ahill,andonthetopofthat,thetravellermightstop,andlookingbackatoldSaintPaul’sloomingthroughthesmoke,itscrosspeepingabovethecloud(ifthedaywereclear),andglitteringinthesun;andcastinghiseyesupontheBabeloutofwhichitgrewuntilhetraceditdowntothefurthestoutpostsoftheinvadingarmyofbricksandmortarwhosestationlayforthepresentnearlyathisfeetmightfeelatlastthathewasclearofLondon.
