           Againthisquarterpassed,theycameuponastragglingneighbourhood,wherethemeanhousesparcelledoffinrooms,andwindowspatchedwithragsandpaper,toldofthepopulouspovertythatshelteredthere.Theshopssoldgoodsthatonlypovertycouldbuy,andsellersandbuyerswerepinchedandgripedalike.Herewerepoorstreetswherefadedgentilityessayedwithscantyspaceandshipwreckedmeanstomakeitslastfeeblestand,buttax-gathererandcreditorcamethereaselsewhere,andthepovertythatyetfaintlystruggledwashardlylesssqualidandmanifestthanthatwhichhadlongagosubmittedandgivenupthegame.
