           Theywent,asitwaseasytotellfromthesoundoftheirvoices,intothefrontparlour,whichseemedtobeakindofoffice.Thedaybeingverywarmandthestreetaquietone,thewindowswerewideopen;anditwaseasytohearthroughtheVenetianblindsallthatpassedinside.

           Atfirsttherewasagreatshakingofhandsandshufflingoffeet,succeededbythepresentationofthenosegay;foravoice,supposedbythelistenertobethatofMrWitherdentheNotary,washeardtoexclaimagreatmanytimes,‘oh,delicious!’‘oh,fragrant,indeed!’andanose,alsosupposedtobethepropertyofthatgentleman,washeardtoinhalethescentwithasnuffleofexceedingpleasure.

           ‘Ibroughtitinhonouroftheoccasion,Sir,’saidtheoldlady.

           ‘Ah!anoccasionindeed,ma’am,anoccasionwhichdoeshonourtome,ma’am,honourtome,’rejoinedMrWitherden,thenotary.‘Ihavehadmanyagentlemanarticledtome,ma’am,manyaone.Someofthemarenowrollinginriches,unmindfuloftheiroldcompanionandfriend,ma’am,othersareinthehabitofcallinguponmetothisdayandsaying,“MrWitherden,someofthepleasantesthoursIeverspentinmylifewerespentinthisofficewerespent,Sir,uponthisverystool”;buttherewasneveroneamongthenumber,ma’am,attachedasIhavebeentomanyofthem,ofwhomIauguredsuchbrightthingsasIdoofyouronlyson.’
