           MrsNubblesironedawayinsilenceforaminuteortwo,andcomingtothefireplaceforanotheriron,glancedstealthilyatKitwhilesherubbeditonaboardanddusteditwithaduster,butsaidnothinguntilshehadreturnedtohertableagain:when,holdingtheironatanalarminglyshortdistancefromhercheek,totestitstemperature,andlookingroundwithasmile,sheobserved:

           ‘Iknowwhatsomepeoplewouldsay,Kit

           ‘Nonsense,’interposedKitwithaperfectapprehensionofwhatwastofollow.

           ‘No,buttheywouldindeed.Somepeoplewouldsaythatyou’dfalleninlovewithher,Iknowtheywould.’

           Tothis,Kitonlyrepliedbybashfullybiddinghismother‘getout,’andformingsundrystrangefigureswithhislegsandarms,accompaniedbysympatheticcontortionsofhisface.Notderivingfromthesemeansthereliefwhichhesought,hebitoffanimmensemouthfulfromthebreadandmeat,andtookaquickdrinkoftheporter;bywhichartificialaidshechokedhimselfandeffectedadiversionofthesubject.
