           LateastheDutchclockshowedittobe,thepoorwomanwasstillhardatworkatanironing-table;ayoungchildlaysleepinginacradlenearthefire;andanother,asturdyboyoftwoorthreeyearsold,verywideawake,withaverytightnight-caponhishead,andanight-gownverymuchtoosmallforhimonhisbody,wassittingboltuprightinaclothes-basket,staringovertherimwithhisgreatroundeyes,andlookingasifhehadthoroughlymadeuphismindnevertogotosleepanymore;which,ashehadalreadydeclinedtotakehisnaturalrestandhadbeenbroughtoutofbedinconsequence,openedacheerfulprospectforhisrelationsandfriends.Itwasratheraqueer-lookingfamily:Kit,hismother,andthechildren,beingallstronglyalike.

           Kitwasdisposedtobeoutoftemper,asthebestofusaretoooftenbuthelookedattheyoungestchildwhowassleepingsoundly,andfromhimtohisotherbrotherintheclothes-basket,andfromhimtotheirmother,whohadbeenatworkwithoutcomplaintsincemorning,andthoughtitwouldbeabetterandkinderthingtobegood-humoured.Soherockedthecradlewithhisfoot;madeafaceattherebelintheclothes-basket,whichputhiminhighgood-humourdirectly;andstoutlydeterminedtobetalkativeandmakehimselfagreeable.

           ‘Ah,mother!’saidKit,takingouthisclasp-knife,andfallinguponagreatpieceofbreadandmeatwhichshehadhadreadyforhim,hoursbefore,‘whataoneyouare!Therean’tmanysuchasyou,Iknow.
