           But,now,thechamberswerecoldandgloomy,andwhensheleftherownlittleroomtowhileawaythetedioushours,andsatinoneofthem,shewasstillandmotionlessastheirinanimateoccupants,andhadnohearttostartletheechoeshoarsefromtheirlongsilencewithhervoice.

           Inoneoftheserooms,wasawindowlookingintothestreet,wherethechildsat,manyandmanyalongevening,andoftenfarintothenight,aloneandthoughtful.Nonearesoanxiousasthosewhowatchandwait;atthesetimes,mournfulfanciescameflockingonhermind,incrowds.

           Shewouldtakeherstationhere,atdusk,andwatchthepeopleastheypassedupanddownthestreet,orappearedatthewindowsoftheoppositehouses;wonderingwhetherthoseroomswereaslonesomeasthatinwhichshesat,andwhetherthosepeoplefeltitcompanytoseehersittingthere,asshedidonlytoseethemlookoutanddrawintheirheadsagain.Therewasacrookedstackofchimneysononeoftheroofs,inwhich,byoftenlookingatthem,shehadfancieduglyfacesthatwerefrowningoveratherandtryingtopeerintotheroom;andshefeltgladwhenitgrewtoodarktomakethemout,thoughshewassorrytoo,whenthemancametolightthelampsinthestreetforitmadeitlate,andverydullinside.
